We are pleased with the large participation in the chamber category Concertino Praga 2021
This year, the Concertino Praga – the Antonín Dvořák International Radio Competition for young musicians is looking for big talents in solo and ensemble playing.
The pandemic has not caused young people to give up and 58 of them registered for the solo category. The first round’s five-member jury, consisting of the Czech Radio editor Markéta Tomková Janáčková, the violinist Shizuka Ishikawa, the pianist Justas Dvarionas, the clarinettist Karel Dohnal and the pianist Karel Košárek, has selected the 25 best performances from 12 countries for the second round.
“I gave higher points than the other jury members, but I really liked the individual performances. Every day, I sat with my headphones on and thought about how well they played, how talented they were and what an effort they had had to make“, is how the clarinettist Karel Dohnal assessed this year’s solo performances.
The jury does not know who it has sent into the semi-final; it only knows their instruments and their numbers. Such have been the rules of Concertino Praga for 55 long years; the anonymity of the recordings and the fact that the competitors do not perform before a “live” jury are original features of the competition.
The number of registered chamber ensembles has been a pleasant surprise for the organisers, because it really is not possible to rehearse chamber playing online. For all that, however, 28 brave souls from six countries have come forward. Passionate youth knows no obstacles. The jury will once again work on-line and will delight four solo performers and four chamber ensembles at the end of the April. The defeated can try again in a year or two (in the case of the chamber ensembles), provided they still meet the age limit.
The second round of the solo category and the first round of the chamber category will take place from 19 to 23 April. The finalists in both categories will be informed on the Concertina Praga website and social networks on 29 April 2021.
